Short BIO

Mr. Pierre Frühling has an academic background within natural resources management, social anthropology and economic history. He has been professionally involved with a broad range of development issues, programs and projects for more than 35 years; first as an investigative reporter and later on as an independent consultant as well as a diplomat and government employee.

Having dedicated the first two decades of his career within international development cooperation to natural resources management, rural and local development and indigenous peoples, Mr. Fruhling became more involved in challenges related to institutional capacity building and the application of climate change perspectives. During the last 15 years he has been specializing in democracy and human rights, contextual analyses of corruption, organized crime and citizen security – always related to their implications for democracy building and poverty reduction efforts.


He has long experience from working and living in Latin America but is also familiar with most parts of the African continent as well as with some Asian countries. Concerning languages, he is fluent in speaking and writing when it comes to Swedish, Spanish and English, has a reasonable level of knowledge concerning Portuguese and understands German.

A former journalist and editor, Mr. Fruhling is a member of the Swedish Writers' Union.
